An auto transport calculator gives you a starting number, but the math underneath is simpler than most people expect: price divided by road miles. On Baier's published lanes, a sedan on open transport from Los Angeles to New York works out to roughly $0.70 to $0.85 per mile, while a shorter run like Kansas City to Boston lands around $0.88 to $1.06 per mile. Longer trips cost more in total but less per mile. Then a few known adjustments, like enclosed transport or an exact pickup date, move the number up from there.
What you'll learn
- Per-mile cost falls as distance rises because loading, unloading and positioning costs get spread over more miles Baier's Snowbird program uses a flat, all-inclusive $1.20 or $1.35 per mile to anywhere in Florida Enclosed transport, exact dates, larger vehicles, remote areas and short notice all raise the base price
Per-mile math on real published lanes
The table below uses Baier's published rate card for open transport, a running sedan, and a flexible pickup date. The implied per-mile rate is just the sedan price divided by road miles.
| Lane | Road miles | Sedan price range | Implied $/mile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles → Boston | 3,000 | $2,100–$2,525 | $0.70–$0.84 |
| Los Angeles → New York | 2,800 | $1,950–$2,375 | $0.70–$0.85 |
| Los Angeles → Jacksonville | 2,420 | $1,700–$2,050 | $0.70–$0.85 |
| Los Angeles → Atlanta | 2,180 | $1,700–$2,075 | $0.78–$0.95 |
| Denver → Boston | 1,980 | $1,550–$1,900 | $0.78–$0.96 |
| Denver → New York | 1,780 | $1,400–$1,725 | $0.79–$0.97 |
| Kansas City → Boston | 1,420 | $1,250–$1,500 | $0.88–$1.06 |
| Minneapolis → Boston | 1,400 | $1,225–$1,475 | $0.88–$1.05 |
Read down the last column and the pattern is clear. The 3,000-mile lane is the cheapest per mile. The 1,400-mile lanes are the most expensive per mile.
Why per-mile cost falls with distance
Every shipment carries some costs that don't depend on how far the car goes. The truck has to get into position, the driver has to load the car and secure it, and at the other end it has to be unloaded and inspected. Under Baier's transit rule, loading and unloading each take about half a day on their own.
On a 1,400-mile trip those fixed costs are divided over 1,400 miles. On a 3,000-mile trip they're divided over more than twice as many. The driving cost per mile is similar; the fixed overhead per mile shrinks. That is why a "per-mile" figure quoted without a distance attached isn't very useful.

The Snowbird program: a true per-mile price
Most auto transport prices are quoted as a total, and per-mile is something you calculate afterward. Baier's 2026–27 Snowbird Fixed-Price Program works the other way. The rate is the price:
- Origin in New Hampshire, Maine or Massachusetts: $1.20 per mile
- Origin in Vermont, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island or New Jersey: $1.35 per mile
- Destination: anywhere in Florida. Open transport, running vehicles.
- Price = road miles × rate, rounded to the nearest $5. All-inclusive, with no hidden fees.
Worked example. Seabrook, New Hampshire to Orlando was recorded at 1,329 road miles on a real quote. At the New Hampshire rate:
1,329 miles × $1.20 = $1,594.80, which rounds to $1,595.
A second example from a Vermont origin: Burlington to Sarasota at 1,469 miles × $1.35 = $1,983.15, which rounds to $1,985.
Program rates run higher per mile than the long western lanes above for two reasons. The trips are shorter, so fixed costs weigh more, and the program price is all-inclusive, with handling at both ends built in. Details are on the snowbird page.
Published price adjustments
Starting from an open-transport, running-vehicle, flexible-date base, these are the adjustments on Baier's rate card:
| Adjustment | Effect on price |
|---|---|
| Enclosed transport | Adds 40–60% to the open price |
| Exact-date pickup | Adds $175–$325 |
| Pickup truck instead of a sedan | Adds $225–$325 |
| Large SUV instead of a sedan | Adds $250–$500 |
| Remote-area states (for example, New Mexico) | Price higher than comparable lanes |
| Short-notice pickup | Carries a surcharge |
Dispatch confirms the final price before booking. An exact pickup date costs more because it takes away the flexibility to match your car to a truck that is already running the lane.
These figures help you spot a quote that is far too low or far too high. They don't replace a real quote for your ZIP codes, vehicle and dates. A price far below the per-mile pattern for your distance is worth questioning before you pay a deposit.
Estimate it yourself in five steps
- Find your road miles. Use any map app for driving distance between the two addresses.
- Pick the closest published lane by distance. Use the table above and note its per-mile range.
- Multiply. Your road miles times the low and high per-mile figures give you a rough open-transport sedan range.
- Add adjustments. Add the published amounts for a pickup truck or large SUV, an exact date, or enclosed transport.
- Get a real quote. Enter your ZIP codes and vehicle at /quote and compare the result to your estimate.
If your move is Northeast to Florida, skip steps 2 through 4. The Snowbird rate gives you the exact price once you know the road miles.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the average cost per mile to ship a car? It depends on distance. On Baier's published lanes, long cross-country runs of 2,800 to 3,000 miles work out to about $0.70 to $0.85 per mile for a sedan, while trips around 1,400 miles run about $0.88 to $1.06 per mile.
Why is a shorter trip more expensive per mile? Positioning, loading and unloading cost roughly the same whether the trip is 1,000 miles or 3,000. On a shorter trip those fixed costs are spread over fewer miles, so the per-mile figure rises.
How accurate is an online auto transport calculator? It is a reasonable starting range. Real prices also depend on season, lane demand, vehicle size, transport type and how flexible your dates are. Use a calculator to check that a quote is in a sensible range, then get a quote for your actual ZIP codes.
Does the Snowbird per-mile price include everything? Yes. The program price is road miles times the rate, rounded to the nearest $5, and is all-inclusive for open transport of a running vehicle to anywhere in Florida.
How much more does enclosed transport cost? On Baier's rate card, enclosed transport adds 40 to 60 percent to the open-transport price. See open vs enclosed transport for when it is worth it.
